Frequently Asked Questions
How much can I deposit in POMIS?
Up to ₹9 lakh in a single account and ₹15 lakh in a joint account, with a minimum of ₹1,000. A joint account of three adults still shares the same ₹15 lakh ceiling.
What is the current POMIS interest rate?
7.4% per year, paid monthly. The rate is fixed for your whole five-year term once you open the account, even if the government revises it later for new depositors.
Is POMIS interest tax-free?
No. The interest is fully taxable and must be added to your income under 'income from other sources'. There is, however, no TDS deducted on POMIS, so you have to declare it yourself.
Can I withdraw before five years?
Yes, after one year. Withdrawing between one and three years costs a 2% penalty on the deposit; between three and five years the penalty is 1%.
