Frequently Asked Questions
Is income up to ₹12 lakh really tax-free in the new regime?
Yes — for FY 2025-26 the Section 87A rebate makes tax zero when taxable income is up to ₹12 lakh in the new regime. For salaried taxpayers, the ₹75,000 standard deduction means salary income up to ₹12.75 lakh is effectively tax-free. Above that, marginal relief prevents a sudden jump in tax.
Which regime should I choose?
The new regime is now the default and is better for most people with few deductions. The old regime can still win if you claim large deductions — home loan interest, HRA, 80C, 80D and NPS together exceeding roughly ₹4–5 lakh. Enter your deductions above to compare.
What are the FY 2025-26 new regime slabs?
0–4 lakh: nil; 4–8 lakh: 5%; 8–12 lakh: 10%; 12–16 lakh: 15%; 16–20 lakh: 20%; 20–24 lakh: 25%; above 24 lakh: 30%. Plus 4% health and education cess on the tax.
Does this calculator include surcharge?
No — surcharge applies on total income above ₹50 lakh and is not included here. For high incomes, consult a CA for the exact figure.
