Tipping 10% on the pre-GST amount of ₹1,143 gives ₹114, rather than ₹120 if calculated on the full bill.
Check the bill before tipping: many Indian restaurants add a service charge of 5 to 10%. It is not a government levy and, per the Central Consumer Protection Authority guidelines of 2022, it cannot be added automatically — you may ask for it to be removed. Where no service charge is levied, 10% is a common tip.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much should I tip in India?
Around 10% at a restaurant where no service charge has been added. Tipping is customary but not obligatory, and considerably less expected than in the United States.
What if the bill already has a service charge?
Then an additional tip is not expected. Note that service charge is not a government tax — under the 2022 Central Consumer Protection Authority guidelines it cannot be added automatically, and you are entitled to ask for it to be removed.
Should I tip on the amount before or after GST?
Before, by convention — the tax is not part of the service. On a bill with 5% GST the difference is small but real, and the tool shows both figures.
Whom else is it customary to tip?
Roughly ₹20 to ₹50 for food delivery, ₹20 to ₹50 per bag for hotel porters, and rounding up the fare for cab drivers. Tipping is far less common outside hospitality.
