Why will my WebP file not open?
WebP is well supported in browsers but far less so in older desktop software, some photo printers and many upload forms. Converting to JPG solves it, since JPG is universally supported.
Will the image get worse?
Slightly, in principle — you are re-encoding an already lossy image. At 90% quality the difference is essentially invisible, and the JPG will typically be somewhat larger than the WebP was.
Can I convert an animated WebP?
Only the first frame. JPG has no animation support, so an animated WebP becomes a single still image.
Why do so many sites use WebP now?
Because it is roughly 25 to 35% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, which meaningfully speeds up page loading. That is also why images saved from modern websites so often arrive as .webp.
